Say whatever you will about
August not being
autumn, (you’re
right).
But I have spent years
studying
the subtle shift in its
great light,
the softer sun in its
late sky
the sound of acorns
landing from old, stalwart
oaks,
the children standing
in the pathway,
delighted,
as leaves
in the opening number
fall, the first
to relinquish,
a lecture
in courage,
I hear this loud
and clear.
So, while it’s not autumn—
facts are facts—
I’ll not be caught
pounding my fist
like a gavel
when it’s summer
itself
offering a gentle
prelude
to all the wonder,
and grace
in the season
next.
