Hello, September!
How I love this month in the garden!! It’s never been quite so colorful and vibrant as it has this year–what a treat!

And yet, the September garden still looks tired, gangly, tall in spirit, gloriously spent, happy, sparse, messy and abundant all at once. If ever a month depicted the state of my heart, it would be September.

This year, the first of September came with absolute magic. There was crisp in the air and gorgeous breezes. We even had rainfall!

Very few times will a California autumn feel prompt in it’s arrival (and fall isn’t even here officially) so it’s fun that on the first day of September, I felt the glorious promise of the autumn season to come!

As for promising things…
This pumpkin was an “accident.” Last fall, my 5-year-old son (at the time) and his bff forever gutted a pumpkin and then proceeded to carry those pumpkin guts up and down the hillside. Seeds dropped somewhere along the way and here we are.

We will see if we can make it to a solid harvest but are all just so delighted by this surprise pumpkin that you could say we have already had a harvest of sorts!
Overall, my garden between summer and autumn is not magnificent at a glance, but stick it in a vase and it’s a soft and lovely scene to behold! It feels like there is a lesson in there somewhere about looking twice at your life on some “ordinary” day and actually noticing things.

A few weeks ago I delivered a flower bouquet to the front desk of my midwife’s office and they were so delighted by the gift. How nice that life will never be too modern for handmade gifts or homegrown bouquets!

It’s this time of year when my eyes are repeatedly drawn up to the sky. In the garden, the rush of the blooming season has past and it is just a time of being.

I do no fall planting. I just relish in all the abundance of spring & summer and savor whatever is left of the flowering season. I do a lot of sitting in the garden during September and study it all—my current life season and my garden in its golden hour of the year.❤️

As for that life season of mine? It’s full. To the point of bursting. Reminds me of this poem I wrote for my third poetry book, Carol of the Mourning Dove.

Trusting God with my unborn baby boy and surrendering my life and all these beautiful things into the hands of God continues to be a point of wrestling for me.

But I continue to be held by the Lord and comforted in His Presence. I will not thieve my own blessing by being afraid of them or being afraid for them—the Lord is with me!
How does September find you? A bit gangly? Messy? Tall in spirit? Tired? Happy? You’re in good company.♥️
That makes you a garden in its golden hour. Bask in it.
The Lord is with you.
P.s. – On Tuesday, September 22nd our third novelette in The Garden of Green Fables will released chapter-by-chapter! Here is everything you’ll want to know!
