In the Heart of It – a poem for mothers at the end of summer

the last baby bird to fly
flew
and the first of the few
sunflowers to bloom
bloomed
and deep in the heart
of June
we plucked red strawberries
two by two.

and I’d say, don’t look
now, but I
already knew—
summer
caught wind
of us again,
us wild little things
taking
our sweet old
time.

summer is a clever
thief, I’ve found
and somehow,
somehow
under
that smooth-talking
sun,
we grew and
grew
and
grew
without
ever knowing
it.
