The garden fairies at Green Fables had a fabulous summer settling into their new home. They aren’t always easy to spot but around the time autumn is turning the corner you catch sight of them more often as they forage for pumpkins and acorns and bouquets of mums to decorate their fairy house and celebrate the season.

The smallest pumpkins are about half their size! And not always easy to find as Green Fables is mostly a garden for flowers and not one for pumpkins. You can imagine this fairy’s delight when he found a pumpkin at last!

Acorns are to fairies what Pumpkin Spice Lattes are to humans. Here I found a fairy in the midst of a mini photo shoot in the Acorn Patch.

She brought home an acorn hat for her baby sister. While the acorn hat is currently a little big, baby sister will have all the autumn and winter months to grow into its charm.

The thing about this fairy child is that he tries to focus on foraging for things like pumpkins and acorn hats but almost always ends up swinging from something and romping through the flowers like they grew and bloomed just to be a jungle gym for him. He’s only expected to return home with great stories of all the fun he has had.

The eldest of the fairy family spent her time in the Mum Forest. Although there were some red and white blooms, she chose to make a bouquet of only the orange. I caught her eye just briefly, welcomed her to the garden, and left some tiny striped string in a pocket of the garden so she could tie her bouquet of mums with a bow.

Of course fairies and humans don’t do too much chit-chatting as is the custom. But if we happen to walk by one another we can’t help but acknowledge with passing glances and little gifts of bouquet string how the season at hand is chalk full of such delight.

Take a leaf from their Fairy Book and go foraging for autumn wherever it is you live. I have a small stash of charming acorns and am waiting for all the beautiful leaves to fall in our church parking lot so I can gather a handful to press and preserve. (Some of the leaves practically sparkle in the light!)
For the things I can’t forage, I notice.
How the breeze feels and swirls the leaves. How soft the sunflower blooms look against their wilting and damaged stalks. How the bright orange marigolds mix with the rich pinks of the zinnias. How the light is growing golden by the day. How sometimes the hushed pastel of the sky blurs our little corner of the world in the most breathtaking way.
Notice and forage and celebrate autumn...however it looks in your neck of the woods.
And if you happen to pass by a fairy, don’t be afraid to chat a little bit. We might be grown-ups and all that, but we can still play. Our imaginations still work if only we’d give them permission.
So, let’s. 🙂
