Around this time of year, a copy of a Tolkien or an L.M. Montgomery classic will do. I sit on an old white garden chair, drinking some iced coffee or tea latte, marvel at the breeze, read the good stories, and listen to my children happily play.

Iced Brown Sugar Earl Grey Latte! (Recipe below!!)

It feels like cheating some days. And by that I mean the afternoon is so light-hearted, the children are playing in the garden so well, and I’m just leisurely passing the time. Isn’t motherhood supposed to be harder than that? Feels like cheating! But of course it’s not. This delightful garden is the fruit of our labor and motherhood isn’t only hard. There are seasons and moments and days that you find your footing both in motherhood and in life.

So when it’s good, let it be good.

And so I do. I ride that wave and love it. I read the old classics, listen to my garden playlists, and listen as my children play. We aren’t yet near true fall weather, but this week is refreshingly nice.

The breeze ushers in an aging year, the acorns have begun to drop sporadically, and even pockets of oak leaves have turned brown.

While we are still two feet in happy, sticky summer, I see the quiet seasonal change before my eyes. I daydream of winter storms and watch how the evening light shifts, slowly shifts, into its eventual golden hue.

It is actually a pastime of mine to watch each season turn into the next. I sit in these weathered garden chairs and look around.

Spending so much time just watching seasons turn ensures I do not rush into autumn because marketing tells me to do so, but because I see with my own eyes how it tip-toes all over nature without hallmark or fanfare.

And believe it or not autumn is already showing its face in tiny little ways that look nothing like pumpkin spice lattes or crisp weather. When you cast off all hallmark ideals and all marketing ploys and sit outside in this seemingly long stretch between summer and autumn, you’ll notice how the magic of the season changes right outside your front door. Dare yourself to fall in love right where you live.

I’ll be over here feeling the summer heat and soaking in the glorious subtle ways I feel it all changing so rhythmically as it always does thanks to our faithful God.💖
