To My Younger Mom Self

If I could say one thing to her—

You’re going to be off balance for a little awhile, then a week before your son turns five he will burst into the kitchen, wonder what you’re doing, discover you’re in there making chocolate brownies from a box.

And you’ll be smiling, toppling over, just trying to get out the baking pan because that big-hearted boy of yours is hugging you so fast, with such exuberance.

Happiness can be like that, you know, sometimes knocking you over flat.

I’ve learned some things are worth not getting your balance back.
