When we were visiting family over Christmas I got a photo of Ben and me under the wedding arbor that’s still standing a decade+ later.

(Us, too.❤️)

Not pictured here are our 3 beautiful children! But I do have pictures of all five of us under the arbor. 😉

We burst through Mojave. Wind in our sails. Walked to the creek with our dreams. Yellow on walls in our first kitchen. Yellow after the graveyard shift. We were young, but not young yet.

Roses and swan songs, babies and crow’s feet…all of these take their bittersweet time.

So, we had begun.

But we hadn’t really.

We had a backyard wedding relying on the desert’s natural beauty to carry the decor. And of course it did.

And then our wedding reception was in the front yard with cake under the gazebo, popcorn on the side, and glow sticks that shot out of a cannon like fireworks.

It was such a special, simple day. I remember looking in the mirror and thinking, “I wouldn’t change a thing.”

The shot of Ben spinning me around at sunset was totally candid. We were just so happy. I can still remember that feeling. It was such an intimate and special moment and I’m forever thankful our photographer caught it!

The poem from above can be found in my book Swan Song of a Scarecrow. I’ve got a few love poems throughout all three of my poetry books. One of my favorites is Good Man from Carol of the Mourning Dove. But some poems belong on a page in your hands and not online for just anyone to stumble upon.

Something so special about writing full-length stories again is getting to incorporate our love from the last decade in a subtle and powerful way. At last, I have found how I can write a love novel and a life epic.

I hope you enjoy the perspective as much as I’ve enjoyed putting it all into words!

See you next week. Happy Valentine’s Day in the meantime. 🙂
